What is APGAR Score Calculator
The APGAR score is a quick assessment of a newborn's condition just after birth. It rates five signs, appearance (colour), pulse, grimace (reflex response), activity (muscle tone), and respiration, each from 0 to 2, for a total of 0 to 10. It is recorded at 1 and 5 minutes of life. A total of 7 to 10 is reassuring, 4 to 6 is moderately low, and 0 to 3 is low.
How to use
- Select the newborn's colour (appearance).
- Select the pulse, then the grimace or reflex response.
- Select the activity (muscle tone) and the respiration.
- Read the total out of 10 and its interpretation band.
When to use it
Scoring a baby who is pink with blue hands and feet, has a heart rate of 150, cries when stimulated, moves actively, and has a strong cry? Select those and you get a 9, in the normal range. Blue extremities alone (acrocyanosis) is why many healthy newborns score 9 rather than 10 at one minute.

What does APGAR stand for?
Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respiration. It is also named after Dr Virginia Apgar, who introduced it. Each sign scores 0 to 2, and a total of 7 to 10 is considered reassuring.
When is the APGAR score taken?
At 1 and 5 minutes after birth. If the 5-minute score is under 7, it is repeated every 5 minutes up to 20 minutes. The score describes the baby's condition, it does not by itself decide resuscitation.
Why do healthy babies often score 9 instead of 10?
Many newborns have blue hands and feet (acrocyanosis) in the first minutes even when otherwise well, which scores 1 instead of 2 for appearance. A 9 from acrocyanosis alone is common and usually not a concern.
