What is Parkland Formula Calculator
The Parkland formula estimates the intravenous fluid a burn patient needs in the first 24 hours. It multiplies 4 mL by the patient's weight in kilograms and by the percentage of total body surface area (TBSA) burned. Half of that volume is given over the first 8 hours from the time of the burn, and the other half over the next 16 hours. The fluid is usually lactated Ringer's.

When to use it
A 70 kg adult with 30% TBSA burns? Enter both and you get 8400 mL over 24 hours: 4200 mL in the first 8 hours (about 525 mL/h) and 4200 mL over the next 16 hours (about 263 mL/h). It gives you the starting rates to set before titrating to urine output.

What is the Parkland formula?
Total fluid in the first 24 hours = 4 mL × weight (kg) × %TBSA burned. For a 70 kg patient with 30% burns, that is 4 × 70 × 30 = 8400 mL, half in the first 8 hours and half in the next 16 hours.
When does the 8-hour clock start?
From the time of the burn, not from arrival at hospital. If the patient arrives 2 hours after the injury, the first half is given over the remaining 6 hours, so the initial rate is higher.
How is the %TBSA estimated?
Usually with the rule of nines (each arm 9%, each leg 18%, front and back of the torso 18% each, head 9%), or a Lund-Browder chart for more precision, especially in children.
