What is HEART Score Calculator
The HEART score rates a patient with chest pain in the emergency department on five items: History, ECG, Age, Risk factors and Troponin. Each scores 0, 1 or 2, giving a total from 0 to 10 that maps to the 6-week risk of a major adverse cardiac event (MACE). It was built to help decide who can go home and who needs admission or further work-up.

When to use it
Working up chest pain in the ED and need a fast, defensible disposition call? Score the five criteria and a 0-3 total flags a low-risk patient (about 1.7% MACE) who is often safe to discharge, while 7-10 points to high risk (about 50%) and an early invasive strategy. Handy at triage, on handover, or when documenting why you admitted or sent someone home.

What do the five HEART letters stand for?
History, ECG, Age, Risk factors and Troponin. Each is scored 0, 1 or 2 for a total between 0 and 10.
What is considered a low-risk HEART score?
A total of 0 to 3 is low risk, with roughly a 1.7% chance of a major adverse cardiac event over six weeks. Many pathways allow early discharge at this level, often after a normal troponin.
Does the HEART score replace troponin testing?
No. Troponin is one of the five inputs, so the score already depends on it. Many centres use serial troponins or the HEART Pathway on top of the base score before deciding on discharge.
